The Montessori Method

Maria Montessori

Maria Montessori, born in Italy in 1870, is considered, the first female physician in Italy. She later immersed herself in her own studies of educational philosophy, psychology and anthropology.

She worked for 2 years with children suffering from mental disorders, and invented ways to teach them basic skills.

The Montessori Method is not just an educational theory. It is the outcome of Maria Montessori’s scientific research and accumulated experience in observing and working with thousands of children all over the world.

As a system, it is quite different from the traditional educational system and does not simply aim at rote knowledge gained quickly. On the contrary, the aim of the Montessori Method is the well rounded development of the child’s personality. For children to be healthy and happy, we would like them to develop in all aspects: socially, cognitively, emotionally, physically and spiritually.

Maria Montessori was nominated three times for the Nobel Piece Prize.

She died in Noordwijk, The Netherlands, at the age of 82 (1952).
